Why Light Sport?
Since 1984, as the ultralight craze was poking its head into aviation, pilots and builders had created larger and faster craft that ultimatly did not conform to the limits on FAR part 103 which governed ultralight aircraft.
Two seaters, with weights far above the 254 pound limit for ultralights were being used regularly without regulation and a patchwork of sometimes loosly followed safety protocals were or were not followed.
By the late 90's the FAA had decided to deal with the growing plethora of "fat ultralights" and looked at some of the developments that had occured in European "microlight" aircraft. Ultimately in 2004 the FAA approved regulations allowing the use of "Light Sport Aircraft (LSA)" for pilots who who hold a sport pilot or higher rating for the catagory and class.
Today there are dozens of quality light sport aircraft that conform to the weight and performance limits. Many of these aircraft come in kit form which allows a builder to easily fabricate, build and test fly within a matter of weeks (usually with factory assistance).
Additional advantages of light sport aviation is the relative cost of the newest of the high-performance light sport aircraft to any new general aviation aircraft. Pilots who wish to train in less time (read lower cost) save big. And those who do not wish to stand for a Third Class FAA medical can operate light sport aircraft under light sport regulations with a valid state issued driver's license.
Light sport aviation may be for you to keep flying or to inexpensively enter the world of aviation.
